Learning the current forest health issues impacting native forests in New Mexico and their associated cause; assessing the impact of current insect outbreaks and elevated tree mortality linked to root disease and bark beetles; measuring forest stand conditions associated with insect, disease, and forest management events; surveying the extent and intensity of dwarf mistletoe infection on the national forests of New Mexico; mapping the occurrence of forest insects and diseases with tablet computers; and becoming familiar with the Forest Service community, structure, and protocols.
